Overview
On 22 October 2025, Reddit, Inc. filed this lawsuit against Perplexity AI, Oxylabs, AWMProxy, and SerpApi, alleging a coordinated and unauthorised scheme to circumvent Reddit’s and Google’s security systems and scrape vast amounts of Reddit’s copyrighted user content. The complaint asserts that the Defendants’ activities were unlicensed and outside Reddit’s data-use guardrails, violating the terms of Reddit’s Public Content Policy and undermining protections for users’ privacy and anonymity.
Reddit claims that this scraping deprived it of control over how its data is accessed and used, caused loss of licensing revenue from legitimate partners, and forced costly security reinforcements. The legal claims include multiple violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), specifically, circumvention of technological control measures under 17 U.S.C. §1201(a)(1)(A) (against all defendants) and trafficking in circumvention tools under §§1201(a)(2) and 1201(b) (against SerpApi and Oxylabs). Reddit also alleges civil conspiracy (against SerpApi and Perplexity AI) and unjust enrichment (against all defendants). The company seeks damages and injunctive relief to stop further unauthorised scraping and misuse of Reddit data.
