Individual case record

Overview

On 16 September 2025, P.J., on behalf of her minor child, filed a civil complaint against Character Technologies, Inc., its founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas Adiwarsana, and Google LLC/Alphabet Inc., alleging that Character AI exposed the minor to sexualised and harmful content. The Plaintiffs claim the chatbot was dangerously designed, lacked warnings, and was knowingly marketed to minors. The Plaintiffs further allege that Google knowingly financed and enabled the unsafe system.

Causes of action: strict product liability (design defect; failure to warn); negligence; negligence per se (violations involving minor protection laws and unlicensed mental-health activity); aiding and abetting liability (Google); unjust enrichment; intentional infliction of emotional distress; fraudulent concealment and misrepresentation; and breach of New York General Business Law § 349 (deceptive practices). The plaintiffs seek damages and an injunction halting distribution of models derived from Character AI.
