Individual case record
On 12 September 2025, Penske Media Corporation (PMC), the publisher of Rolling Stone, Variety, and Billboard and other publications, filed an antitrust suit against Google and Alphabet, alleging the tech giant is unlawfully extending its monopoly in general search into online publishing through AI Overviews and Gemini. PMC claims Google coerces publishers to permit their content to be indexed, repurposed, and used to train large language models without consent or compensation. These AI-generated summaries allegedly divert user traffic from publishers’ sites, depriving them of advertising and subscription revenue.
PMC contends Google’s conduct turns the search engine from an intermediary into a direct competitor, locking users within Google’s ecosystem and exploiting its market dominance to control both search and content distribution. The complaint asserts six causes of action: reciprocal dealing, monopoly leveraging, monopolisation, and attempted monopolisation under the Sherman Act, along with common law unjust enrichment.
